![]() ![]() I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. This was a little hard to spot, and caused some serious head scratching for a while. I was able to use a flap disc to carefully sand it down and it works nice and smooth now with no binding. It appears that the casting is a little thicker on the right one. King Pin Sets Ball Joints Tie Rod Ends Drag Link. By memory, I think that they were either Bulldog or Thompson Products. After much head scratching and contemplation I was able to determine that the rounded top of the king pin was rubbing on the backing plate and trying to lift the king pin off of the thrust bearing. That is why I did not notice it on initial assembly. After removing the backing plate, the problem disappeared. The one on the passengers side was binding on a full left hand turn. I pulled the drag link and the tie rod so that I could turn each spindle separately. I finally got back at it this morning and started to check it out. I was not happy with the results and waited till after Hershey so that I could pick up some new parts for the steering box. I got this all back together and took it for a short test drive in and out the lane. Thanks for your patience with my dumb questions. Is this the correct convention, and was it always this way? The reason that I ask is that the new king pins are marked opposite to this, and causing me to doubt myself. That is, passengers side is right and drivers side is left. I thought that the sides of a vehicle were determined as if sitting in the drivers seat. The new king pins were marked left and right. I assume that the felt goes to the bottom next to the bushing and the cup washer goes to the top to cover it. He just says to put them at the bottom, but no comment on orientation. He is very specific about the orientation of most parts, but doesn’t address the felt and cup washer.
